DIY Car rig

This past weekend I built a nice car rig to take some rolling car photos for a friend of mine. We have been talking about it for awhile and we finally decided that we should just try it. The entire car rig cost me about ~$150 which was pretty nice. I used a wired remote and walked with the car as it moved since I did not figure out a way to trigger it using my Radiopopper JRx’s (didn’t get around to it) :

Things needed :

  • Avenger suction cups (2x) – I bought the one with the fixed spigot. HIGHLY recommend getting these, they are so strong
  • Manfrotto super clamps (3x)
  • Manfrotto magic arm
  • 5ft pipes (4x)

Here is a quick picture showing you how far the camera is from the car. For more behind-the-scenes photos click here

Results

And here are some results that took maybe only 1.5hrs to take. The longest part was pumping the suction cups to ensure that it was on tight and the pipes wouldn’t come crashing down damaging his car and my camera at the same time.

Final thoughts

I wish that we picked up sturdier pipes because it was shaking a lot. We are currently looking up ways to stabilize the boom arm from shaking so we would be able to get sharper photos. It would also have been a lot better if the sky wasn’t cloudy. Since my friend’s car is silver it just blended in with the white sky making it boring, and low contrast.

Goodbye to the old Yankee stadium

Went to see the old stadium before its all gone, and to be honest seeing the demolition makes me sad. I have been a Yankees fan since 1996 and I have been to many games in that stadium. So many memories of being there watching the games. My first baseball game that I ever went to was in Yankee stadium and it was against the Oakland A’s, had so much fun. The new stadium is beautiful but will never replace what the old one meant to me and many other Yankee fans out there

Homemade Lychee and Orange Jellies

So this past weekend my mom and I had decided to try making our own Lychee and Orange jellies using Agar Agar which is a gelatin that is made from seaweed. Agar Agar is great where you don’t have to refrigerate for the jelly to harden and depending on how much water you put in it, it can harden within 10mins!

Agar Agar comes in different forms either a brick or flakes. I normally buy the clear colored ones so that I can use food coloring with it to it any color I want.

After heating up the agar agar with water and juice we poured the mixture into molds where I then put pieces of fruit into so that each one had a bite of lychee/orange.
For lychee we added coconut juice and orange we added orange juice.

Union Square Street Performers

In NYC there are tons of street performers out there daily to entertain and maybe to make a little bit of money. I grew up here and you would think that someone like me might be immune it all now but sometimes I love to stop and just watch/listen. This past weekend I was walking around Union Square and we heard someone in a striped yellow jumpsuit calling for everyone’s attention. I had to stop and watch just to see what it was all about and I definitely do not regret it!

The main entertainer who is a yoga instructor was in great shape and after showing off his dance moves he showed us what he called the ‘real’ show. He was going to jump over people and the first time he jumped over one, the second 6 people! Here are some photos of some of the dancing and of his jumps in mid-air. At the end there are two videos of the jumps as well.

Chinese New Year Parade 2010

Last year was my first year going to the parade and it was tons of fun but very crowded. For 2010, I wanted to walk around and take pictures of the crowds reaction and the atmosphere of the event. This year the parade had a larger crowd which made it hard to walk around without being pushed but I was still able to get some pictures on my XSI as well as my Rolleicord. The rolleicord pictures will be featured in another post as I’m still going through a few rolls of film before I batch process them.

Before the parade started there were already tons of people waiting alone the route making it hard to maneuver without being pushed or pushing someone else. The cops were nice enough to let me stand in the middle to grab a couple of shots of the street.

Strobist photos

So last week I had gone to the doctor for pain in my right wrist and it turns out that I have tendinitis because of the diagnosis I had to temporarily stop the strobist theme for this year because it hurts to carry everything as well as my camera. I am still doing a 365project though as its become a daily routine for the last 2years.

Through the month of January, I was able to buy a 2nd flash which added a new dimension to my strobist photos and I have learned a lot in the 31days. There will still be strobist photos popping up on my flickr stream every once and awhile but probably only on weekends as it will be easier for me to set up photos on those days.

Following are a few of my favorite ones so far! :
